Makoto Shinkai shared that he has almost completed the storyboard for his next movie. Asahi TV shared an interview with the famous director back in December 2020. During the interview, Makoto Shinkai talks about the upcoming film and the effects of the ongoing pandemic. According to the author, the new movie will have a post-apocalyptic theme.
Translated: “Here’s what I’m doing. I’ve been working on this board every day drawing scenes for the upcoming movie, crying (it’s really hard). When it was finished, I asked a lot of people to give me feedback. Even now I’m still having a hard time making minor edits. It’s very difficult to make a scene, but I want to make a movie that people will definitely like.”
Shinkai shared that he started writing the script at the time the Japanese government first declared a state of emergency. The situation also affects the emotions of the film, which is why the story will be post-apocalyptic. It is clear that the director has completed the draft, and what remains is to edit and complete the work based on feedback he received.
Shinkai’s 2016 fantasy romance Your Name was a critical and commercial success, becoming the third highest-grossing anime film of all time. His 2019 film, Weathering with You, also achieved similar critical and commercial success.
